Not only is that white lady trying to control Viola’s perception through denial, she’s also trying to invalidate and cut off any discussion of the particular de-womanization endemic to Black womanhood–misogynoir. Like, this lady’s incredulity, no matter what she thinks she’s trying to do with it, is so violent.
